Opportunity is a fickle mistress, but sometimes she give the axe be kind, even to geeks.

No one is of all time going away to make the claim that getting into the videogame industriousness is easy. There are lonesome sol more jobs available, and on that point are multitude lining up around the block up hoping to get them. At the Sami time, it's not unrealistic to do either, and people do make it, whether through hard work, fortune, or a compounding of both. In Issue 299 of The Dreamer, Greg Tito talks to his former classmate Jeff Libby, whose lifetime of geekiness helped him score a business with Lord of the Rings Online developer, Turbine.

One of the just positions available to an KO'd-of-work lawyer was at Houghton Mifflin, the American publishing house of all of Tolkien's books. Jeff was already a winnow of Tolkien's work (he's read God Almighty of the Rings every year since third grade), but he right away devoured the wealth of source material establish in The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and all of Tolkien's notes published aside his son Christopher.

"The employment was fine," Jeff recalled of his sentence at Houghton Mifflin. "Lone in hindsight can I tell that I was biding my time for something else to come along."

That something other was a brief mention by his wife after she had glanced at the Turbine website. "As it happened, there was an opening for an Associate Content Designer on Godhead of the Rings Online, a bet on that I had heard was in development years before simply hadn't followed precise closely … From my wannabe-spunky-designer linear perspective, it was a perfect rival." He knew he had only a hobbit's chance of landing place the job, but Jeff chased it like Gollum chased the One Ring.

To apply, Jeff had to resign a writing sample. "I wrote a thing called 'Concerning Football,' which was supposed to equal the account of a hobbit attempting to account Land Football to his confused audience. It was stupid, but information technology must have see as existence Mediate-earthy enough in tone," he remembered. After passing the first hurdle, Jeff was asked to design a quest and a dungeon blank space for it to occupy. "I agonized finished some of them for the week provided, and was static up at 2 AM the night before they were delinquent." Apparently, Turbine was impressed and asked him to come in for an interview.

Libby is recovered remindful that luck played a colossal part in him getting the job. But while he was emphatically in the right place and the reactionist prison term, he was also understandably the right man for the job.
